Beautiful Moon

This morning, the sun seemed to be taking a little bit longer to rise...
Normally, I don't like that...but today, I didn't mind. The sky was starting to clear up from this crazy storm that just passed through here...
The moon was so bright and full, it was amazing. It was sitting right over the ocean, glowing as bright as can be. It truly took my breath away :)

Three Feathers and a Butterfly

Former Coast resident Martha Furey will be performing her newest one-woman play, "Three Feathers and a Butterfly" on Dec. 13 and 14th @ 8:00 pm at the Helen Shoeni Theatre on the grounds of the Mendocino Art Center.
Three Feathers and a Butterfly is a play based on her own family story going back to her great, great, grandmother, Sarah Foster who was a Civil War widow. Furey plays Sarah, who leads us through an intriguing story about a woman who is left alone with two sons on a farm in Kansas.
Having lost her husband, John Foster to Malaria and starvation in the dreadful Confederate Prison Camp in Andersonville, Georgia, she describes the difficulties of rebuilding a life for herself and her children after the war ends. Not only does Sarah have her sons, she now has an illegitimate half Cherokee child to explain to friends and family. It is a fascinating story that is filled with real family history, American Civil War history, and poetic license, which are all woven together into a fascinating one-woman play. The play is set in 1895 as Sarah struggles against a well meaning son and his attempts to move his 65-year-old mother off the farm and into a nearby town. This strong willed Kansas woman does not make her son's task an easy one. Humor, tragedy, hope and even a bit of romance make this a very compelling play.

Sounds wonderful!

Whale and Beer Festival Weekend

We could not ask for a better weekend than this to celebrate the Whale and Beer festival. It was absolutely gorgeous and it still is not over yet. We had tons of people down on Pudding Creek beach, out on the bluffs, walking the Ten Mile Coastal Trail, watching the whales, barbecuing on our deck here at The Beachcomber, and just enjoying this spectacular day. It was so nice to see everyone enjoying themselves out there this weekend and it makes it even better having this wonderful weather. What more could we ask for? It is always nice to have this kind of weather during such popular events and it makes it a wonderful experience for all our visitors. And what an exciting morning it was watching all the people running by who joined in on the Whale Run. That was a wonderful sight to see here from The Beachcomber Motel. Thank you to all who chose to stay with us and we hope that everyone enjoyed their weekend here on the coast.

Huge Hail!

Monday night, all Fort Bragg residents received a series of storms and woke up on Tuesday to learn we were out of power. Good thing we had some breaks throughout the day on Tuesday, which allowed crews time to repair damage before the next set of storms were due. The power had been flickering from time to time, but has stayed on...even through our hail we received which was quarter-size and even bigger in many areas! Quiet an amazing sight! I have NOT seen hail that size, in our town of Fort Bragg!
This set of storms have caused closure of MacKerricher state park's Lake Cleone picnic area, due to the water rising. You could see picnic tables sticking up from the water after the lake rose about two feet!
We are seeing many "storm chasers" enjoying the view and the rain all along the bluffs in front of the Beachcomber. From our office, we can see how amazing the spray is, shooting 20-30 (or maybe even more) feet in the air. The waves sure are pounding out there!
Yesterday, I enjoyed the thunderstorm, which happened right as it was getting dark. Such a beauty!
Hopefully mother nature is letting us go back to sunshine soon!

I just saw a spout!

The great gray whale migration has begun. Females are heading to the winter calving lagoons in the warm waters of Mexico to give birth, while the males and teens tag along. This happens every year between December and April and right now spouts and tails are everywhere along the Coastal Trail right behind The Beachcomber (and up and down the California Coast of coarse..) Some 20,000 gray whales are expected the next few months as they travel 10,000-12,000 miles round trip — the longest known migration of any mammal. There will be plenty of whales to see during the 2010 Fort Bragg Whale Festival, March 20 & 21. Now’s the time to book a room. For more information on the migration, check out Learner.Org and follow the migration.
